September has turned its aging flowerhead gray, but it still has its long, straight rod (stem) after which its various kinds are named. While they last, the plant’s wooly gray (sometimes white) spent seed clusters will provide food for insects and birds. (Images taken in Brooklin, Maine, on September 5 and August 17, 2026.)
