As you see above, our fawns are getting big and adventuresome, but they’re still wearing their baby spot camouflage, staying within sight of mom,  and bashfully dashing away from photographers and causing blurry images:

White-tailed deer fawns grow amazingly fast. At birth in the spring, they usually weigh between 4 and 10 pounds; by Autumn, they weigh about 85 pounds, according to the research. At 2 to 3 weeks of age, they start supplementing their diet of mothers’ milk with tender vegetation, including growing grasses and wildflowers.

By fall, the fawns will have exchanged their baby spot coats for the plain, heavier winter model and they’ll be eating only adult food alongside mom, including leaves and twigs, as well as grass and wild apples if they can find them.
